DESCRIPTION:THE COLLECT.    \nAlmighty and everlasting God\, who hatest nothing that thou hast made\, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts\, that we\, worthily lamenting our sins\, and acknowledging our wretchedness\, may obtain of thee\, the God of all mercy\, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.\nThis Collect is to be read every day in Lent after the Collect appointed for the Day.  \nFOR THE EPISTLE.   Joel 2. 12\nTURN ye even to me\, saith the Lord\, with all your heart\, and with fasting\, and with weeping\, and with mourning.  And rend your heart\, and not your garments\, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful\, slow to anger\, and of great kindness\, and repenteth him of the evil.  Who knoweth if he will return\, and repent\, and leave a blessing behind him\, even a meat-offering and a drink-offering unto the Lord your God?  Blow the trumpet in Zion\, sanctify a fast\, call a solemn assembly\, gather the people\, sanctify the congregation\, assemble the elders\, gather the children\, and those that suck the breasts; let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber\, and the bride out of her closet.  Let the priests\, the ministers of the Lord\, weep between the porch and the altar\, and let them say\, Spare thy people\, O Lord\, and give not thine heritage to reproach\, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people\, Where is their God? \nTHE GOSPEL.  S. John 1. 1\nIN the beginning was the Word\, and the Word was with God\, and the Word was God.  The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.  And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.  There was a man sent from God\, whose name was John.  The same came for a witness\, to bear witness of the light\, that all men through him might believe.  He was not that light\, but was sent to bear witness of that light.  That was the true light\, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.  He was in the world\, and the world was made by him\, and the world knew him not.  He came unto his own\, and his own received him not.  But as many as received him\, to them gave he power to become the sons of God\, even to them that believe on his Name: which were born\, not of blood\, nor of the will of the flesh\, nor of the will of man\, but of God.  And the Word was made flesh\, and dwelt among us (and we beheld his glory\, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth.

Amen.\n\n\nTHE LESSON FOR THE EPISTLE.   Isaiah 40. 1.\n\nCOMFORT ye\, comfort ye my people\, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem\, and cry unto her\, that her warfare is accomplished\, that her iniquity is pardoned; for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness\, Prepare ye the way of the LORD\, make straight in the desert a high-way for our God. Every valley shall be exalted\, and every mountain and hill shall be made low\, and the crooked shall be made straight\, and the rough places plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed\, and it all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. The voice said\, Cry. And he said\, What shall I cry?
